About 100 meters below Kengkhar Middle Secondary School lies a sacred site (Ney) of Lama Tsundu Tharchen, one of the great followers of Gyelwa Shakey Rinchen. It was consecrated by His Eminence Khenchen Katayana in the Female Iron Ox Year, 2021. The history of the Neyis traced back to the 17th century. Today, fragments of information can be retrieved about Lama Tsundu Tharchen and his legacies from religious texts at Talo Goenpa.
Sometime in the early 17th century, Dungkhar Lama of Kengkhar attained parinirvana leaving his followers in complete loss and grief. Later, the inhabitants of Kengkhar invited Ngawang Drugyel, who was a great Lama from Khaling and entreated him to remain as the abode at Dungkhar Goenpa. Ngawang Drugyel accepted the offer and resided at the Goenpa saying prayers and doing meditation. He would travel around the village and begged alms for his livelihood. One day, upon reaching Doktang, he met his consort, who gave birth to two children; a son and a daughter. They had eight grandchildren (seven from son and one from daughter). Lama Tsundu Tharchen was born to the daughter of Ngawang Drugyel. As a child he was known by the name Maha Guru. Since his early childhood, he received teachings and instructions from his grandfather (Ngawang Drugyel). He was involved in daily prayers and basic meditations since the early age and completed hundreds and thousands of prostrations. Later, upon the advice of his grandfather, Lama Tsundu Tharchen (known until then as Maha Guru) received Kagyud teachings and initiations under Gyelwa Shakya Rinchen. It was Gyelwang Shakya Rinchen who gave the name Tsundu Tharchen for his ambitious pledges and extraordinary diligence, perseverance, and commitment in his religious undertakings.
